Yoga or the gym? Why you really don't have to choose

Shilpa · 6 August 2026 · 2 min read

"Should I do yoga or join a gym?" I hear this a lot, usually from people who think they have to pick a team. You don't. The best-moving bodies I know do a bit of both.

What the gym gives you

Lifting weights builds muscle, bone density and raw strength, all of which matter more and more as we age. Running and cycling build your heart and lungs. The World Health Organization recommends both aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening work every week.

What yoga adds

  • Mobility. Strength is only useful through the range you can actually access. Yoga trains you to be strong in longer positions, which is exactly where injuries tend to happen.
  • Balance and body awareness. Standing on one leg while breathing calmly is harder than it looks, and it carries straight into better squats, deadlifts and running form.
  • Recovery. Slow, breath-led movement helps you come down from intense training rather than staying wired.
  • Breathing. Learning to brace and breathe well transfers to every heavy lift and every hard kilometre.

Strength without mobility is stiff. Mobility without strength is fragile. You want both.

Ideas for every kind of athlete

Lifters: hip openers, thoracic (upper back) rotations and shoulder mobility. Your overhead press will thank you.

Runners: hamstrings, calves and hip flexors, plus single-leg balance work for ankle stability.

Dancers and pilates lovers: you're often wonderfully mobile already, so we focus on strength at end range and steady, controlled transitions.

Desk workers who also train: chest openers and gentle backbends to undo the screen hunch.

How to fit it in

Two or three yoga sessions a week alongside your training is a great rhythm. Use a dynamic flow on lighter days, and a slower, restorative practice after heavy sessions.

Tell me what training you already do when you book a trial. In online classes I'll suggest options that suit your sport, and personal sessions can be built entirely around your goals.
