Some of my most dedicated students are in their 40s, 50s and beyond, and many of them started yoga late. If you think you've missed the boat, you haven't. Midlife might be the very best time to begin.
What changes as we get older
- Muscle mass slowly declines unless we actively work to keep it.
- Bones lose density, especially for women around menopause.
- Balance quietly gets worse, which matters a lot more than people realise.
- Recovery takes longer, so pushing through pain stops being a good idea (if it ever was).
- Stress has a way of piling up, between careers, children and ageing parents.
None of this is a reason to slow down. It's a reason to train smarter.
How yoga helps
The NCCIH notes that yoga can help with balance, flexibility and quality of life, and that it's generally safe when practised carefully with a qualified teacher. In my experience it does something else too: it gives people a calm, unhurried hour in a very busy decade.
Five things I focus on with midlife students
1. Strength, held well. Warrior poses, chair pose and bridge, held for several breaths, build real strength in the legs and hips.
2. Balance, every class. Tree pose, standing leg lifts, and simple weight shifts. A wall nearby makes it safe and lets you work harder.
3. Joint-friendly mobility. We move the spine in every direction and look after the shoulders and hips, without forcing end range.
4. Gentle loading for bones. Weight-bearing poses like plank (on knees is fine) and downward dog put healthy stress through the arms and wrists.
5. Breath and nervous-system care. Long exhales and short relaxations help with stress, sleep and, for many women, the ups and downs of perimenopause.
The goal isn't to touch your toes at 50. It's to get up off the floor easily at 80.
A word on ego
The hardest part of yoga after 40 is often letting go of what we used to be able to do. The most progress happens when you meet your body where it is today, with curiosity rather than comparison.
If this sounds like you, I'd love to work with you. Join a live online class with options for every level, or choose one-to-one sessions in Gurgaon for a practice built entirely around your body and goals.
